Large business energy users in the UK had until the end of last month to register with the CRC energy-efficiency scheme.  This means that if you have a half hourly meter for your business electricity and you use more than 6,000 Mwh of business electric you must report your carbon emissions every year.

For the company there is much information to be collected  in order to register and it looks as if many companies haven’t even started this process yet.  However those that have registered have found the data gathering excercise useful in terms of in which areas and how much energy they are using.

A new fund worth billions of pounds is being created in order to help more than 4 million small businesses become more green.  It is proposed that the fund will offer loans to replace old energy inefficient equipment.  A similar scheme is being set up to loan around £6,500 to up to 14 million domestic energy users.  The government is talking to both British Gas and high street banks regarding the scheme.

Companies with a usage of more than £500,00o of business electricity a year must sign up to the Carbon Reduction Commitment by September 30.  It has been calculated that there are thousands of firms that will now face high penalties for failing to register their energy use with the Environment Agency.

EDF Energy has announced a price increase for some of it’s regional tariffs of 2.6%.  EDF insisted that this increase in prices will only affect a small amount of it’s customers and have blamed the increase in distribution and transmission costs which have affected new business electricity prices.  EDF pointed out that these costs are currently approximately a fifth of customer’s electricity bills.  EDF have said that they have been absorbing the higher transmission and distrubition costs for a long time now and they are unable to do this many more and now have to pass these on to the customers, which ultimately will also effect business electricity customers.

First Utility business electricity customers have been informed that they will see an increase of, on average, 5.2% on their business electricity bills (this is also happening with domestic customers, not only the business electricity customers).  First Utility are saying this is due to the new charges that the gas and electricity distribution and transmission companies have been charging all business gas and business electricity suppliers since 1 April and also because of increased business electricity prices.
